In her work, Hiroko Nakajima produces geometrical running patterns or designs. She makes use of artificial geometrical forms based on mathematical principles and concepts to restructure a series of natural phenomena and events that occur under a certain set of conditions. Nakajima refers to these as “continuums.”

The title of the exhibition is derived from a vague question that interested Nakajima as a small child: “What is the world made up of?” Using this question as an artistic concept, Nakajima arrived at works in which she develops spaces based on the mathematical notion of space-filling curves in order to demonstrate that “although they may not be visible, continuous realms (spaces) definitely exist.”

In this exhibition, Nakajima presents a new installation of continuums constructed in a regulated and sensuous manner by filling the whole of the open display space with patterns made up of series of lines. By intuitively incorporating the disparities, irregularities, and deficiencies contained in geometrical continuums, Nakajima developed planar works and spaces as new forms of visual expression. Then, during a stay in Europe, Nakajima discovered the uniquely Japanese aesthetic rooted in the incomplete. Throughout this exhibition space, two- and three-dimensional works provide close-ups of certain pieces of the continuums, which are expressed through shapes, colors, and lines, while including elements (parts) that comprise a sense of continuity while shifting back and forth between other dimensions. It is our hope that you will enjoy experiencing the works of Hiroko Nakajima, who interprets these unique realms and reimagines them as spaces.
