French paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries form the core of the Pola Museum of Art collection. The Museum also holds a formidable collection of oil paintings by Japanese artists spanning from the Meiji (1868-1912) through the Showa period (1926 – 1989).
Held in tandem with Foujita: Explorations in Color, this exhibition presents paintings by avant-garde artists such as Modigliani and Picasso who were contemporaries of Foujita and greatly influenced him in early 20th century Paris. Featuring as well paintings by Japanese artists such as Oka Shikanosuke and Ebihara Kinosuke, the exhibition also explores artistic expression by Japanese painters who admired Foujita and were active in Paris after him.
This exhibition also introduces a selection of masterpiece modern French paintings from the collection by artists such as Cézanne and Matisse.
