Impressionist painters such as Monet and Renoir, with their unprecedented themes, compositions, and techniques, were at the center of innovation in painting during the latter half of the 19th century. Although initially criticized, their influence on contemporary art and on the art of following generations was immense. Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and other movements that aimed for new styles of expression appeared one after the other, the passion of the artists swiftly thrusting dizzying change into 20th century painting.
While facing their canvases independently and pursuing their own ideals, these painters respected and supported each other as companions in friendly competition.
This exhibition introduces 19th to early 20th century masterworks of French modern art from the Pola Museum of Art collection, along with words that reflect the feelings of respect and friendship these artists shared.
