Western Paintings, Japanese Western-style Paintings and Japanese-style Paintings
Western Paintings
Forming the core of the collection are modern European paintings, chiefly works by Impressionists such as Monet and Renoir, and twentieth-century painters such as Picasso and Chagall. In this gallery, approximately twenty paintings are presented, generally following the course of Modern painting.
Japanese Western-style Paintings
The Pola Museum of Art has paintings that provide an overview of the major painters and important movements in the history of Japanese Western-style painting, from early Meiji era to the Taisho and Showa eras.
In this gallery, we follow how Japanese painters created a Japanese style of oil painting by assimilating Western painting in original ways.
Japanese-style Paintings
Modern and contemporary Japanese-style paintings represent one of the highlights of the Pola Museum of Art. The collection has been built around works of artists who profoundly influenced Japanese-style painting of the Showa era, such as Sugiyama Yasushi, Takayama Tatsuo, and others.
